This boat was hand crafted by West science teacher Fred Johnson over seven months. The boat is a 7-foot, 6-inch dinghy made of marine plywood, built with stitch-and-glue construction, covered with fiberglass cloth inside and out, and then painted with marine paint. The gunwales are made of Philippine mahogany and there’s Irish knot-work in the breast hook and stern knees.

Peña was state Teacher of the Year for the VFW’s National Citizenship Education Award and placed 5th in the nation among 54 other middle school educators.
“As a molder of minds, character, and individuals, I am challenged and ever mindful to instill within my students those skills that will enable them to succeed in the real world,” Peña said. “I believe that those skills are developed within our classrooms and in our daily interactions with one another.”
Each year, teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and patriotism to their students.
The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics and promote America’s history, traditions and institutions effectively.
The VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award recipients are selected from entries submitted by local VFW Posts in every state and overseas.
Peña has taught in the Nampa School District since 2001 and currently serves as an instructional coach at West working with teachers on effective teaching strategies and classroom practices.

Each student at West Middle School receives a student folder which serves as a reference, communication and organizational tool. Included in the folder are:
- Calendars for students to record assignment due dates, important school dates and other important information
- Parent communication page for parents to document notes to the teacher and vice versa
- Math and Language Arts reference pages to use as tools for various assignments
- (A Student Goal Sheet will be added the month of September.)
One side of the folder is used to keep work that is not yet completed and considered in progress. Students are instructed to move the work to the back of the folder when it is complete. To aide students in recognizing complete work, the folder has a checklist to go through. Finally, there is a section of the folder where students will rate themselves daily according to an effort and achievement rubric. The purpose of these folders is to help keep kids organized with their work and provide them with the tools to be successful in their classes.

Thank you students, parents and teachers for a great start to the school year. We have many students participating in extra-curricular activities (volleyball, football, cross country). If your child would like to be a part of any of these, it is not too late to join. Students need a physical and completed paperwork which can be picked up at the front office.
There will be an Open House for all students and their families to come to the school and meet their teachers on Thursday, September 10th from 6 to 8 pm. There will be a baked potato bar and dessert for families to purchase dinner. Look for more information to come on this event.
If you have not received a login to Power School to access your child’s grades and attendance from the internet, please contact our office. This is a great way for you to monitor their academics. There are computers in the front entry of the school for those that do not have internet access at home. Don’t pass up this opportunity to be aware of your child’s progress and attendance.
Thank you again for a great start to the school year!
