Learning to give thanks was a week long lesson for the preschoolers at Parkview Preschool Program. Teachers talked about vocabulary words related to thanksgiving with their classrooms for two weeks. This is in preparation of the Thanksgiving feast for the whole program. It was held both at Parkview and Roosevelt schools last Thursday, November 19. The three year olds celebrated the feast at 10:15 in the morning while the four year olds gathered together at 12:45 in the afternoon. The food was prepared by the staff in crock pots and was served family style to facilitate independence and communication during meals together. Our preschoolers learned to sing their thanks for the food prepared for them. They also learned to serve themselves from serving plates and bowls. They asked with words for seconds or declined verbally what was being offered. There was a lot of waiting going on, which is the trait for the month---waiting. It was a great celebration and a wonderful learning experience for all. |
| | 11/23/2009 10:34 AM | There were 217 who attended Parkview's first Family Fun Literacy Night. Parents, grandparents, aunts, siblings, and other care providers attended the event which consisted of four learning centers. The centers were: pizza dinner with the DVD "Everyone Learns," shared reading with felt board, rhythm sticks with ryhming and syllabication activities, and project and song to built vocabulary and comprehension. The hands on activities kept everyone engaged, including older siblings, who in most families are the caretaker for the little ones in the family. Each family took home a bag with books, alphabet mat, pencils for rhythm games, felt boards with pictures related to the main story read, "Apple Trouble." Feedback from both staff and parents indicated that it was a successful event. It gave parents and other care taker materials to read and to build literacy skills with their young ones at home.
Many thanks to Parkview staff for volunteering their time; to our community partners: Lee Pesky Learning Center and Kiwanis Club of Nampa; and to district tech support.
To our many parents who support the development of their children, many thanks. |

Did you know that a majority of reading problems can be prevented in preschool and the early grades? This is according to the National Research Council.
The Idaho Early Literacy Project sponsored by Lee Pesky Learning Center is partnering with Parkview Early Childhood Center to promote early literacy with Family Fun Literacy Nights on November 10 and January 13 from 6:00-7:30pm at Parkview. The goal of this project is to prepare Idaho's children for success in literacy. Last year, Lee Pesky Learning Center provided literacy training to all of Parkview's teachers and this year they are providing materials and follow-up support.
Every parent attending the Literacy Nights will receive an "Every Child Ready to Read" booklet and DVD filled with fun literacy activities. Every child attending will receive a children's book and an alphabet placemat. The project will also provide a pizza party for all the families participating.
PARKVIEW EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER is the Nampa School District early childhood special education program. Parkview serves to provide preschoolers a supportive environment to successfully begin their lifetime learning experiences and to provide parents with knowledge, skills and resources to help their children.
LEE PESKY LEARNING CENTER, an Idaho nonprofit, is committed to helping children unlock their unique potential and improve their overall quality of life by focusing on strategies for educational success: one-on-one testing and academic intervention for learning disabilities, early literacy education, and teacher training. In its work, LPLC is a partner with parents, schools, and the community to help kids succeed in school.
This synergistic partnership increases literacy skills of preschoolers by directly building literacy capacity of teachers and parents.
If you'd like more information about this project please contact Cristianne Lane at 208/283-3533 or clane@LPLearningCenter.org
Please contact Ludee Vermaas at 208/498-0560 or lvermaas@nsd131.org for information on Nampa School District early childhood special education.
If you are planning to attend the Family Fun Literacy Nights on November 10, please call Parkview 498-0560 for confirmation by November 9, Monday so we can plan for the book bags and food. |

Through the collaborative efforts of our community volunteers led by Pastor John Dotson and district staff led by George Sheppard, we are able to offer outdoor play as an instructional activity for our three and four year olds with atypical developmental needs. Since the district early childhood special education consolidated to Parkview twelve years ago, a preschool playground is finally installed in collaboration with community volunteers headed by Pastor John Dotson and the district grounds staff. The play equipment was moved from the Lincoln Center to Parkview early this summer. Several staff showed up to assist Pastor John and his crew. Once it was transferred to Parkview, Pastor John built the play equipment piece by piece for five weeks in July when the morning weather was tolerable. The district grounds staff under George Sheppard spread the ground cover for safety and hygiene last week.
More work is planned such as moving the see saws and replacing the swings set. A simple rededication will be held once the work is completed. In the mean time, our preschoolers are enjoying exploring the equipment with their small and large muscles and using their language with their peers. |

Phil Peterson, Nampa Kiwanis Club Board member announced that Kiwanis Club is awarding Parkview Early Childhood Center $750 towards its Parent Education Program for the school year 2009-2010. In addition, Kiwanis donate a weekly children's book in honor of their weekly guest speaker to the Parkview book collection used in the classrooms and may be included in the parent resources library.
Phil Peterson is also an active community member to the Parkview Building Advisory Team which meets monthly. His insightful contribution to the ongoing conversation about the program challenges continues to be very relevant and valuable.
