Our Expectations: Success for all students

In Nampa schools, our goal is for students to develop the solid foundation of learning they need to be successful in life. State and local standards define what students should know and be able to do.

To help students master the standards, our instructional approach is student-centered based on the needs of the child and guided by research. We have selected the best curricular materials to support our goal.

The majority of our students learn well in our program. However, 20 percent of students experience some difficulty for a variety of reasons: they may not speak English; they may have a learning disability; or they may just need extra help. Our system is designed to provide the extra help or interventions needed by these students.

Here’s a quick outline of our instructional plan for math and reading and how it is used to customize learning to meet our students’ needs.

Math

Tier 1 Core Instruction:

·         Elementary school students (K-5) work on math 60-75 minutes a day

·         Middle School students (6-8) receive 50 minutes of mathematics instruction daily.

·         Depending on the grade level, high school students receive 80 minutes of instruction every two days.

Tier 2 Supported Instruction:

·         In elementary schools, the extra help varies with the needs of the student. For many, it includes 20 to 30 minutes extra about three to four times a week.

·         In the secondary schools, students who need additional time to master key math concepts are enrolled in math strategies classes and spend an additional 50 minutes on this important subject.

Tier 3 Intensive Instruction:

·         Dependent on student need, up to an additional 30 minutes daily.

Reading

Tier 1 Core Instruction:

·         Primary students in K-3, work on their reading skills 120 minutes each day, in addition depending on the students skill, they receive an additional 30 minutes.
